As I was looking at my bookshelves the other day, I began to think of all the books I still haven’t read yet. I have over 70 unread books in my bookshelves. Oops. So to lower that number, I’m slowly working my way through all of my unread books. I’m also wanting to reread books that I haven’t read in years. I want to revisit these books to form a better opinion on them. With time, our perspective on things shift, so I’m wondering if that means I’ll actually enjoy some books I didn’t before, or vice versa.
- Ulysses by James Joyce
The gigantic Ulysses by James Joyce has been on my to-read list since first year of university. My professor mentioned never being able to finish reading this book, so it’s become my goal to finish it. The book totals over 900 pages, so this one may take a while. I will write a review for the book once I complete it. - Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari
I started reading Sapiens in March, and have been slowly reading it bit by bit in the past few months. But, I still haven’t finished it. It’s definitely not a binge read type of book, but I do actually want to finish it. - Eva Luna by Isabel Allende
Eva Luna is a book that’s part of the Rory Gilmore challenge, but it’s not the only reason why I want to read it this year. I noticed recently that I didn’t have a lot of Latinx authors on my shelves, which I felt wasn’t right at all. I wanted to change that by buying Eva Luna, and hopefully more Latinx books in the years to come. - Speak, Memory by Vladimir Nabokov
I’ve had this book on my shelves for a couple of years, but was never sure when the right time it would be to read it. After discovering it was part of the Rory Gilmore challenge, I knew the time was now. - Lolita by Vladmir Nabokov (reread)
A book I read in first year university that I absolutely loved. A story about the manipulation of language, and the importance of reading critically. I want to reread it since it’s been 8 years since I’ve read this book, and I wonder if I still think the same way of it. - The Second Summer of the Sisterhood by Ann Brashares
I feel like I’m 10 years too late to this, but I still haven’t read this book, and the sequels, since I was a teenager. I remember devouring the first book when I was younger, and bought the other 2 books right away. But did I read them? No. Why? Couldn’t tell you. So I’m going to read them and probably cringe at the teenage drama. But I’m sure it’s going to be fun.
- Shopaholic Ties the Knot by Sophie Kinsella
Another series I haven’t finished when I was in high school was the Shopaholic series. I read the first two books super fast during the summer before grade 12, and I did read the first few chapters of this book. However, with school starting, I ended up not finishing the book. I kept telling myself I would read it at a later date, and now 9 years have passed. LOL.
- The Diary of Anne Frank
A book that I always wanted to read, but also one that is hard to pick up. Already knowing what happens to Anne Frank, I know this book is going to be a heavy one to read. However, I want to learn more about Anne Frank, and what she wrote about. - Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
I bought a book that contains both A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations back in 2011 when I was still in high school. I have read A Tale of Two Cities, but I never read Great Expectations. I’ve heard this novel is incredible, plus it’s part of the Rory Gilmore challenge. This book gives me winter vibes for some reason, so I’ll probably pick it up around November. - Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë (reread)
I read this books a couple years ago, and I didn’t like it that much. In high school, my English teacher recommended it to me, saying it was her favourite book ever. I have concerns with that statement now. However, I would like to revisit it to see if I might like it better now that I’ve read more Gothic literature.
Not a huge list, but definitely a list I want to complete before the year’s end. I really can’t wait to revisit some of these books and see if my opinion has changed over the years!
